The History of Zeta of New York

Written By Christopher "The Senator" Strang
In 1996, 11 graduating Phi Theta Kappans from throughout New York gathered in a two room suite at the Holiday Inn in Binghamton, N.Y. 48 hours, 6 sheet pizzas and 246 cups of coffee later, what became known as the "Binghamton Conference" was adjourned, and Zeta of New York was born. Of course, it wasn't quite that simple. That first meeting, where we set our goals, was just the beginning of a long journey. Pursuing those goals, and sometimes just staying together, was anything but easy. There were endless unforeseen challenges, and numerous obstacles to overcome. Our founding group of officers was up to the task. Under the leadership of PJ Cataline, our first President, combined with the dedication of a core group of officers, Zeta persevered through all challenges. Through teamwork, creativity and old fashioned hard work these Zetans gradually met each goal, and then set new ones. The stated main purpose of this organization was, and still is, to provide a network of support for all Phi Theta Kappans and alumni throughout the state. In simpler terms, we want to help people. Through workshops, speeches, fellowship and other less tangible methods, we have succeeded in doing that. This is not to say that Zeta is all work and no play. But it goes without saying that when you put a bunch of Phi Theta Kappans together, they are going to have a good time. Our camping trips, fellowships and meetings have all included much laughter and tons of hugs. There is so much more to the history of Zeta, but it would take too many pages to explain it all. Zeta of New York is simply the name given to a group of individuals dedicated to each other, a common purpose and "a lifelong commitment to excellence."
